Colleges and Schools Focus on Program-level Standards
More than a thousand individuals joined the January edition of the AWARE webinar concerning program level standards and credit hour definitions, indicative of the strong interest in the new accreditation requirements. The new standards regarding retention, placement and licensure pass rates at the program level were adopted by Council in December and became effective Jan. 1, 2012. Sanctions for non-compliance take effect in 2013; in the interim, institutions will receive feedback through the accreditation process on the degree of compliance of their programs and appropriate remedies, including improvement provisions expressed in their Campus Effectiveness Plan (CEP). Institutions with team visits during January, February and March will receive a written review of program level performance in team reports. Institutions will have an opportunity to address the program level issues in their written response, as usual. Both sets of information will be reviewed by Council in April. (Link to Dec. 2011 Memo to the Field). For institutions not meeting the new program level standards, an improvement plan in the CEP will be sufficient for compliance in 2012.
The AWARE webinar on program level standards will be repeated on Friday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. EST.
As a reminder, the ACICS Criteria reflect minimum standards for programs and institutions. Continuous improvement toward excellence in program outcomes is primarily the responsibility of the institution. Student learning outcomes at a program and institutional level that reflect excellence are those of greatest interest to prospective students, funding sources and policy makers.
Substantive Change, Due Process Revised at Policy Conference
Modifications to standards and expectations regarding substantive changes and due process of Council actions were adopted during the annual ACICS Policy Conference in January. The Council developed and adopted more specific guidance about when changes to an institution’s programs, credential levels, locations or ownership require a site visit between accreditation cycles. Likewise, Council adopted modifications to the due process provisions for Council actions to clarify the maximum timeframes for resolving accreditation compliance issues. Watch for more details on the revised policies in the next Memo to the Field.
